The Science of Your Smile

Posted on

Hey all!

Did you know that its actually important to your health to smile? Smiling is actually the cause of why we feel happy sometimes, and being happy is good for you! A study in 1989 was done by a physiologist named Robert Zajonc on the emotional effects of smiling. He found that the emotional state was significantly better after people had mimicked the motion of smiling by producing a long “e” sound. Even forcing a smile can improve your mood! Olivia_Smile2014

Keep on smiling! 🙂

Best Student Blog Nomination: Mae’s Way

Posted on

Hey all!

Its almost the end of the student blogging challenge! Guess what that means. It’s almost time to choose the best of the blogs that participated in the challenge. So I have decided to nominate this amazing blog by a girl by the name of Kira for the Best Student Blog. Her blog is called Mae’s Way, which I think is a very original, eye catching name. Kira does an amazing job keeping her blog interesting and personal as well as informative. I think her blog definitely worthy of this nomination and the award for Best Student Blog.

Kira’s writing in her blog is very passionate. All of her posts are personal but also very relatable and interesting. A lot of her posts are about experiences she has had, almost non-fictional short stories. They are detailed and overall well written. One of the posts that shows these qualities is her post “Lombard Street, San Francisco”. This post is pretty simple but quite entertaining. In it, she talks about her passion for travel, her trip to this particular street, and some interesting facts about it. All of this being discussed in a single post makes it adaptable to every person. Even if you have never been to Lombard Street, it is interesting and it inspires the idea of visiting it. In this way, it also adds value to the readers life. Kira did not seem to create the idea of having an intended audience. I think that because her posts are able to be interesting to many people, it is okay that she does not have a specific intended audience

Mae’s Way is also well outfitted with graphics and videos that are relevant to the posts and add to them. When the blog is opened to the homepage, the graphics are placed aesthetically and do not overwhelm the reader, which is important. Also, her posts are formatted well. She uses paragraphs in most of them and bullet points in some. They are broken up into manageable sections that make sense to the reader. Kira also used facts and research to back up opinions she posted which is important to making the reader understand your opinions.

Overall, Kira has done an amazing job creating this blog. Her posts are always personal, yet relevant and interesting to the reader. Personally, I thought her blog added something to my life and I think it will for other readers. Her posts adapt to the interests and knowledge of each reader which is important. Also shed used graphics well and her blog was aesthetically appealing. I think Kira’s blog is definitely deserving of the award for Best Student Blog.

Bucket List

Posted on

Hey all!
As I have grown up, I have found that I have a passion for adventure. I love doing new, different, and exciting things. Jumping off of stuff and being in places where I can’t really communicate with the locals excites me. So I decided to make a bucket list to share with you. Here it is!

Go Skydiving- Kinda the stereotypical thing to be on the top of a persons bucket list, but it really is something I want to try. I love the feeling you get when falling and it would be fun.

Bungee Jump- Another stereotypical one. But again, I love the feeling of falling and I think it would be a lot of fun.

Travel to Greece- I love to travel and I have a passion for the ancient art.

Travel to Argentina- I don’t have much reasoning for this one. I just think it would be a cool country to visit.

Live in Paris- When I think about Paris, I think about underground artistry, which may or may not occur in Paris. I love the idea of living in a little, well-designed studio apartment overlooking Paris, painting on huge canvases during the day and going out at night.

See the Northern Lights- Isn’t this on everyone’s bucket list? I mean, who doesn’t want to see streaks of natural, colored light in the sky at night? It sounds so cool.

Go white-water kayaking- I have been white-water rafting. Now I want to try white-water kayaking. I like the idea of being in control of the boat and I can imagine it is quite thrilling.

Go to Ghana- Another country I don’t really have much reasoning for. It just seems cool I guess.

Spend a week with a family in a third world country- I  have been raised in a first world country with all of my needs and many of my wanted met. People in third-world countries don’t have the ability to meet their wants  I think it would be interesting to experience what these families go through.

Visit Iceland- Everything I have ever heard about Iceland has been good. So I think I am gonna visit it so I can decide for myself if it is an amazing place.

See the 7 Wonders- They are the wonders of the world. Why would they not be on my bucket list?

Indoor Skydiving- This sounds so much fun. If you don’t know what it is check out this link. I think that will help you understand why this is on here.

Be a bridesmaid- Pretty dress, flowers, cake? Uh yes please. I think it would be fun to be an important part of a wedding without having to make all the decisions or be the center of attention, too.

Hang gliding- Me being a thrill-seeker.

Sail in the Caribbean- I love sailing. The Caribbean is pretty. End of story.

Graduate High School- Well uh I want to do well in life. I personally think this is the first step.

Visit every continent- Just to be able to say it.

Go to college- Another step to doing well in life, I think.

Get married- This is not gonna happen for a long time. But yeah, I wanna do that.

Have kids- Also not happening any time soon!

Foster children- Combining my love of kids with my love to help people. Perfect.

So that’s pretty much it. I probably have more, but those are the ones I could think of. I hope this was interesting to you and inspired you to make a bucket list, or add something to yours.

Any opinions on certain things on my list? Or maybe you have something you would definitely put on yours? Comment bellow!

Enjoy!

Pet Peeves

Posted on

Hey all!

Lately, I have been noticing the little things people do that annoy me. Some might call them pet peeves. So I made a list of the ones I have noticed lately. Here it is!

  1. People who don’t hold doors– My school has an intercom lock system on all the doors into the school. It drives me crazy when people don’t hold the doors once they have pressed the button and been let in. All it does is makes the person’s on the other side of the intercom and my life more difficult.
  2. People who can’t spell correctly with spell-check or auto correct– If you are typing on a computer, you shouldn’t have noticeable spelling errors often. Even if you are in a program that doesn’t have spell-check, copy your writing into a word document and correct your spelling. It takes two minutes and it saves people like me the agony.
  3. People who use the wrong tense or word in place of another- It has been drilled into my head for years that its “She and I” not “Me and Her”. Its basic grammar.

Do you have any pet peeves?

Enjoy!

American Sign Language

Posted on

Hey all!

Lately, I have been starting to teach myself American Sign Language, or ASL. ASL is the primary language used by the deaf and/or hard of hearing people that uses hand gestures and facial expressions along with other gestures and movements to speak. It is a fascinating language to learn.

ASL was created by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, who, in the early 1800’s, met a young, deaf girl named Alice. He wanted to be able to teach her to communicate. He succeeded in teaching her a few words. Her father thought it would be good for Gallaudet to start a school for the deaf. Gallaudet took this to heart and decided to pursue the idea. After much searching for a program director for a teaching program for the deaf who would teach him their techniques, Gallaudet met with the director at the Paris school for the Deaf. This school was using French Sign Language. He persuaded one of the pupils of the school to come to America and help him start a school. French Sign Language combined with the signs already used by the deaf population in America, and evolved to become the language we know today as ASL.

ASL Alphabet

I am learning ASL online on a website that provides lessons and a video dictionary. It is a very helpful resource. I am currently on lesson two. So far I have learned my alphabet, my numbers up to 20, and basic conversational vocabulary. I have also learned some basics about sentence structure. I hope to be fluent in ASL in two years. I think this will benefit me in the future because it is another language and it means I will be able to communicate with those who are deaf or hard of hearing. It may even open up job opportunities or help me get into college.

My question to you is:

Have you ever decided to learn a skill just because you could? What was it?

Enjoy!

Memories

Posted on

Hey all!

This weeks blogging challenge is on memories. I think that memories are anything in your past that you clearly remember and that have helped shaped you as a person. They really do shape how people live, their attitude toward things, and their personality. They can have negative and positive affects depending on if they are negative or positive memories.

Positive memories can make a person have a positive outlook on certain situations or things. For example, if you have a memory of playing with a dog when you were little and having fun, you will probably enjoy being around dogs. This can be true for negative memories as well. If you have a memory of playing with a dog and having it bite you when you were little, you may have a fear or just a dislike of dogs.

Also, memories can affect a persons mindset. Generally, large numbers of negative memories could cause a person to have a negative mindset on life overall. Positive memories can cause a person to have a positive outlook on life.

Based on this, you should try to surround yourself with positives that will help you create positive memories. Of course, negative things will happen, but think about the fact that they are in the past and they really don’t have to affect how you live the rest of your life. As difficult as this can be, it can really up your outlook on life.

In the next few days, try to think about times this has applied to your life. Did you ever have a memory that caused a fear or a negative view of something?

I hope you all decide to learn from this post and use what you learned throughout life.

Enjoy!

Favorites: Clothing and Accessories

Posted on

Hey all!

This week I wanted to give you guys a favorites list again. I think I will do these every so often. They are kind of fun.

So this week, I decided to do a favorites in clothing and accessories, a list of things in my closet that I couldn’t live without. These are not specific, just general things that I think are staples in a closet of a teenage girl.

  1. Jeans- I think everyone should have a few great pairs of jeans. They are pretty much what I wear everyday. All of my jeans are from Gap. I find that I really like the fit of their legging jeans.
  2. Handbag- I tend to leave the house with a lot of stuff usually. I’m not a “lipstick, phone, and a twenty” kind of girl, so a small clutch doesn’t work for me. Larger handbags or totes for outings are essential to carry things.
  3. Ankle boots- These are kinda my obsession. They are so versatile and always adorable. I wear them with skinny jeans usually, but they also add a causal touch to a summery dress.
  4. Converse or another casual sneaker- These are great for everyday wear. They can be worn with anything- skinny jeans, skirts, dresses. Also, they are compact, which makes them easy to carry.
  5. Jackets- Jackets are great to tie together a look. A few nice jackets that go with everything in your closet are great. I love a classic denim jacket.

I hope you all enjoyed this list. Anything you require in your collection of clothing and accessories that wasn’t listed here?

Enjoy!

Favorites: Apps and Web Tools

Posted on

Hey all!

This weeks blogging challenge asked us to talk about five of our favorite apps or web tools. However, I only found that there were three that I use often enough to recommend. I go to a tech-intensive school, so I tend to use many of these very often. Some are things that I have to use for school, others are just helpful and good to know about. So here is my list:

  1. Finish.– This is an app for apple products. It is a to-do list app that is very convenient for school work or anything else you need to remember to do. You don’t need to sign up for this app and you can be any age. Its very useful.
  2. EasyBib– This is a website and an add-on in Google docs. It is a way to create your works cited pages for reports and essays. its simple and it has many ways to format your citations. You also do not have to sign up for this and you can be any age to use it.
  3. Spotify– This is an app for any device. It requires a download. This is an app for music. I am one of those people who really like to listen to music all the time, so this is great for me. I have it on my phone. You need an account for this and you need to be over 18 or over 13 with a parent of guardian to consent.

Let me know some of your favorites in the comments below!

Enjoy!

Where I Am From

Posted on

Hey all!

Today I am doing activity 3 and 4 of this seeks blogging challenge. The challenge this week was to write about where you are from. In case you would like to look at the blogging challenge, here is the link.

I am from New York. No, not the city, I live in upstate New York. Around where I live, its very much “farm country”. I am from a pretty tiny town. Wilderness is one of the things you would have to see if you visited upstate New York. We have many hiking trails, campsites, ponds, lakes, streams, etc. They are all amazing places to visit during the summer months. I also live not to far away from a few caverns that are open to the public for tours. They are amazing caves to visit. I also don’t live too far from the Baseball Hall of Fame, which is interesting if you like baseball. I would recommend these places to anyone who came to visit my area.

I planed on posting a quiz with this post for you all to try out. However, we had some technical difficulties with that, so maybe some other time.

My question for you this week is:

Have you ever been to New York? Or the United States if you live overseas?

Leave your answers below.

Enjoy!

Traveling

Posted on

Hey all!

When I was 8, my grandmother took me to England for the first time. This sparked my love of travel. Ever since then, I have enjoyed traveling all over.

My first trip abroad was when I was 8, as stated above. My grandmother was living in England at the time. I went for a month. We were in a town that was about a 45 minute train ride from London. During that trip, I met many people, saw many sites, and had a great time.  I kept a journal of the entire trip. The next summer, I went to England again. I also took a five day trip to France while in England. It was another amazing experience. In France, I stayed in a city called Morlaix in Brittany, which is one of the provinces. My aunt lives there. We stayed on her farm. Morlaix is on the coast of France, very near the ocean,  so we got to go to the ocean many times. When I went back to England for the rest of the month, I got to tour the royal residents, an aquarium, and I got to ride the London Eye.

After returning from these trips, I knew I loved traveling. My next trip abroad will be to China in April of 2015. I am going with my school. It is going to be an amazing trip! One place I really want to visit is Greece. I want to see all the amazing history that resides there.

Have you ever been out of the country? Where?

What countries or places would you like to visit? Why?

Enjoy!
